Perspectives of perception

The Albertina in Vienna is showing a remarkable exhibition entitled “Why Three Tones Do Not Form a Triangle” by the renowned German artist Katharina Grosse. This exhibition, which is characterised by its colourful dynamism and experimental approach, poses a challenging question to the conventional perception of art. Grosse, born in 1961 in Freiburg im Breisgau, is known for her large-format, room-filling works that blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture and architecture.

The philosophy behind Grosses works

Katharina Grosse’s art is characterised by non-linearity, multidimensionality and an intensive exploration of colour. Her works are often of a bold, almost unpredictable nature and deliberately break through the traditional boundaries of painting. In this exhibition, the viewer is introduced to a world in which colours and forms expand beyond traditional canvases, stretching across walls, ceilings and even floors. This artistic freedom and autonomy that Grosse demonstrates in her works challenges viewers to re-evaluate their ideas of space and art.

Interaction with the space

A central feature of the exhibition is the way in which Grosse’s works interact with the exhibition space. The Albertina itself becomes part of the artwork, blurring the boundaries between exhibition space and artwork. Grosse uses the spray technique to apply her vibrant colours to a wide variety of surfaces. This process creates an immersive experience in which visitors wander through the rooms and become part of the artwork. The installations are designed to both emphasise and challenge the architecture of the space, creating a dynamic and interactive environment.

Reflection and significance

The exhibition “Why Three Tones Do Not Form a Triangle” invites visitors to reflect on the relationship between seeing and hearing, between visual art and auditory perception. Grosse plays with the idea that although the visual and the auditory represent different sensory experiences, they are nevertheless interwoven in their perception and interpretation. By emphasising the visual aspects in her works, she challenges viewers to think about the way we experience art and how our senses react to it. The exhibition is not only a display of Grosse’s impressive ability to master colour and form, but also a profound exploration of how art can influence and expand our perception of the world.
