Between colour and form
With The Sprayed Dear, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is dedicating a solo exhibition to Katharina Grosse as part of the Great State Exhibition Baden-Württemberg 2025, focusing on three new works that were developed especially for the art building on Schlossplatz – including a monumental aluminium sculpture in the 26-metre-high Kuppelsaal. The title plays with the double meaning of the English “dear” and “deer” and also refers to the building’s landmark: the golden stag on the dome.
In addition to the main work, the exhibition also features two other new sculptures: Ghost, an oversized form made of white polystyrene, and Untitled, a construction made of primed canvas. Both pick up on Grosse’s ongoing exploration of space, surface and perception. The presentation is complemented by previously unpublished sculptural works from the 1980s, which were created during her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
The exhibition is curated by Hendrik Bündge, supported by Dr Linda Marie Kirschey. An accompanying catalogue will be published by Sandstein Verlag in May 2025 and documents the works on display as well as installation views from the art building. The publication concludes a trilogy with previous stops at the Centre Pompidou-Metz and the Kunstmuseum Bonn and offers a comprehensive classification of Grosse’s sculptural work in a museum context.
