A new look at porcelain

The renowned artist and designer Rolf Sachs has created a unique candlestick collection called “Touch” in collaboration with the traditional Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory in Munich. This collection symbolises the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art. For over 275 years, the manufactory has been known for its masterful production of porcelain, always placing the highest value on perfection, purity and attention to detail. Sachs’ approach, which is a balanced mixture of control and laissez-faire, breaks with these traditions and opens up new perspectives in the art of porcelain.

The philosophy behind “Touch”

The candlesticks in the “Touch” collection embody a departure from the traditional perfection of porcelain manufacture. Sachs emphasises the beauty of imperfection by shaping porcelain in an intuitive and bold way. The pieces in the collection are characterised by cracks, fingerprints and seemingly random shapes. This approach is not only an artistic act, but also a declaration of love for the material. Sachs explains that true perfection often appears sterile and that he always loves flaws more. The collection comes in various sizes and shapes, both in pure white biscuit porcelain and with coloured glazed sections.

The craft and the technology

The production of the “Touch” chandelier collection represents a departure from the strict processes of the manufactory. Instead of the usual processes such as moulding, turning, embossing, painting and firing, Sachs experiences working with the porcelain mass as a more spontaneous, almost experimental undertaking. This approach makes it possible to emphasise the uniqueness of each piece. The limited edition collection, which has been available since 24 October 2023, reflects his holistic approach to the material. For Sachs, feeling and shaping the fine material with his hands remains something special.

“Touching” the modern world

The “Touch” collection is not only a series of objects, but also a critical examination of modern-day perfectionism. Through his work, Sachs wants to encourage viewers to recognise and celebrate imperfections. He believes that eccentricity is an important expression of personal character and encourages people not to hide flaws, but to savour them. The collection invites you to rediscover the soul of porcelain and encourages discussion as a centrepiece on the table. In this way, “Touch” is fully in keeping with the tradition of Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory, while at the same time opening up new paths in the world of porcelain.
