The search for parallels in today’s world

In a contemporary interpretation of historical material, the production of “Woyzeck” directed by Kevin Barz in the Technical Ballroom raises essential questions about human nature. The main character, Woyzeck (Fabian Kulp), an exploited and murderer, is placed in a modern context that prompts us to look for comparisons in our own time.

Virtual reality and the forlornness of a gamer

One fascinating aspect of this reinterpretation is the possible parallel to a gamer who loses himself in virtuality. Similar to Woyzeck, this modern character also appears to be alienated from the forces of society, which enables a profound examination of the question of individuality and exploitation.

The darkness behind the screen

Another contemporary point of reference could be a sad incident from 2020 in which a YouTuber locked his girlfriend on the balcony until she froze to death and broadcast the gruesome act live on the internet. The dark underbelly of the digital age and the brutalisation of individual behaviour are presented here as modern challenges reminiscent of Woyzeck’s brutal reality.

The loss of a personal perspective

A particularly poignant parallel can be seen in the figure of the abused and murdered Valentina, whose own view of the world before her violent death is thematised. This reflection on the female protagonist, comparable to Büchner’s Marie (Zainab Alsawah), emphasises the importance of diversity of perspective and the fight against violence and oppression in society.

Violence, sexism and mental health

The contemporary production in the Technical Ballroom does not shy away from a radical confrontation with current social problems. Violence against women, sexism and the challenges of mental illness and addiction are intensively addressed in the performance. This artistic approach invites the audience to engage with the pressing issues of our time and opens up a space for critical reflection on humanity in the modern world.
