A sailor, a city, 24 hours: photographer Davide Edoardo stages Tangier as a nostalgic film set that combines fashion, memory and self-projection.

With “Rendez-vous à Tanger,” Italian photographer Davide Edoardo presents his first solo exhibition in Morocco. The 18 black-and-white photographs, taken between 2024 and 2025, are on display from August 14 to September 20 at the Galerie Les Insolites in Tangier. For decades, the city has served as a projection surface for Western artists and now, in Edoardo’s series, becomes a stage once again.

At the center is a nameless sailor wandering through the city for 24 hours. Yet it is not about him, but about the photographer’s gaze: the alleys, walls, and shadows of Tangier transform into a subjective film space, somewhere between the cinematic aesthetics of Fassbinder in the 1970s, the fashion photography of the 1990s, and today’s inclination toward aesthetic nostalgia. The images could be from yesterday—or from fifty years ago. That is precisely their calculation.

Edoardo, who worked in the fashion industry for many years before dedicating himself fully to photography, visibly brings his design experience into his visual language. The photographs are flawlessly composed: 16:9 format, precise shadow control, a touch of glamour. Yet nothing feels over-staged. Instead, a quiet rhythm develops that carries through the series – restrained, yet determined. The style remains deliberately controlled, almost like a choreography of seeing.

The opening of the exhibition was accompanied by music and scent – a Moroccan soundtrack, orange blossom in the air. It was a multisensory concept that left immersion not to the city but to imagination. Edoardo’s Tangier is not reportage but quotation. And yet therein lies its appeal: in the conscious afterimage of a place as real as a film still – and perhaps precisely for that reason, so powerful.
