“us” – The Newtons in front of the camera

The book “Helmut Newton & Alice Springs. us and them” gives the reader a rare insight into the private world of the two famous photographers Helmut Newton and Alice Springs. In the form of a personal diary, it not only tells of their impressive work, but also of their deep love for each other. Over a period of 55 years, it traces the bond and creative development of this extraordinary artist couple in numerous, sometimes very intimate photographs in a touching and impressive way.

“them” – The Newtons behind the camera

In addition to images from the photographers’ private lives, there are also pictures of celebrities such as Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, Donatella Versace and Catherine Deneuve, who were in close contact with the Newtons. The photographs constantly surprise the viewer with new, unexpected perspectives on the artistically sophisticated portrayals. They convey to the viewer a timeless feeling of closeness and authenticity that unmistakably bears the characteristic signature of Helmut Newton or Alice Springs.

The photographic style of the Newtons

For all their private ties, the Newtons cultivated different photographic styles. Helmut Newton’s style is characterised by careful staging, dramatic lighting and provocative poses. His pictures are characterised by glamour and provocation. June Newton, known under the pseudonym Alice Springs, on the other hand, developed an intimate and authentic style. Her pictures, which, like those of her husband, were mostly taken in public places and homes, carefully capture the aura of the people portrayed and radiate natural self-assurance and emotional diversity.
