Photographer Marvin E. Newman

The book “Photographs 1949-1983” by Marvin E. Newman offers a chronological retrospective of an artist who had a decisive influence on American photography. It showcases Newman’s work over three decades, from his early work in Chicago to his iconic images of places such as Times Square, Wall Street and the West Coast. His work includes street photography, reportage, sports photography and portraits. His pioneering work in colour photography, which was still considered unconventional in the 1950s, is particularly noteworthy. Newman’s images capture everyday life and have a vivid and haunting effect.

Colour as a means of expression

An important aspect of the book is Newman’s innovative use of colour. While black and white was the predominant medium in art photography at the time, Newman used colour photography specifically to document the chaos and energy of the streets of New York and Las Vegas. His shots of Times Square and Broadway in particular, where he experimented with flash and the bright colours of neon lights, lend his images an almost cinematic quality. They bear witness not only to Newman’s urban pulse, but also to his technical courage and his search for new visual paths.

A pioneer of photography

The book, edited by Reuel Golden and with an essay by Lyle Rexer, gives Newman’s work the space and recognition it deserves. It not only offers a comprehensive overview of his work, but also allows the development of photography in the second half of the 20th century to be recognised. The retrospective makes it clear that Newman’s work goes far beyond the commercial sector and that he is one of the most important American photographers of his time. A standard work for all lovers of photography and visual storytelling.
