Max Mara – An italian fashion empire

Max Mara is one of the most famous and successful fashion houses in the world. The brand stands for timeless elegance, high-quality materials and refined cuts. But how did it all begin? And what makes Max Mara so special? In this article, we take a look at the history and philosophy of Max Mara.

Max Mara was founded in 1951 by Achille Maramotti, a young lawyer with a passion for fashion. He had learned tailoring from his grandmother, who ran an atelier. Maramotti’s vision was to create high-quality ready-to-wear clothing for the modern woman that stood out from mass production. He named his company Max Mara.

The first collection of Max Mara consisted of only a few pieces designed and sewn in a small room in Reggio Emilia. The garments were characterized by simple lines, neutral colors and fine fabrics. They were inspired by French haute couture, but at the same time practical and wearable. Maramotti sold his creations to local boutiques and soon earned recognition for his quality and style.

In the years that followed, Max Mara expanded rapidly, opening its own stores in Italy and abroad. The brand evolved into a fashion empire with several lines that catered to different styles and needs. These included Sportmax, Weekend by Max Mara, Marella, Pennyblack, iBlues and many more. Max Mara also collaborated with renowned designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Dolce & Gabbana and Narciso Rodriguez, who left their creative mark on the collections.

A trademark of Max Mara is the camel hair coat, which was introduced in 1981. The coat is made of the finest camel hair and has a classic cut with a lapel collar, a tie belt and patch pockets. It is available in a variety of colors, but the signature camel is still the best seller. The camel coat has become a symbol of timeless elegance, worn by stars like Audrey Hepburn, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez and Kate Middleton.

Max Mara is now a global fashion company with over 2,200 stores in 90 countries. The brand remains true to its original philosophy: to create high-quality clothing for the modern woman that combines comfort and style. Max Mara is also socially engaged and supports art and cultural projects such as the Max Mara Art Prize for Women, an award for contemporary women artists. Max Mara is more than just a fashion brand: it is a story of passion, innovation and success.
