Franca Sozzani – The visionary of fashion

Franca Sozzani was one of the most influential and innovative figures in the fashion industry. As editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue, she shaped the magazine’s style and aesthetic for over three decades and championed social issues such as racism, environmentalism and women’s rights. She was a pioneer who crossed boundaries and broke new ground in using fashion as an art form and a means of communication.

Franca Sozzani was born in Mantua on January 20, 1950. She studied literature and philosophy at the University of Milan and began her journalistic career at the children’s magazine Vogue Bambini. From 1980 she was responsible for the publications of Lei, a magazine for young women, which she revolutionized with her creative and provocative style. In 1982, she also took over the management of Per Lui, a magazine for young men.

In 1988, Franca Sozzani was appointed editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue, a position she held until her death in 2016. Under her leadership, the magazine became a platform for experimental photography, artistic expression and social engagement. She collaborated with renowned photographers such as Bruce Weber, Peter Lindbergh, and Paolo Roversi, and nurtured new talent. She created iconic covers and editorials that often tackled controversial topics such as war, violence, AIDS, hunger, beauty ideals, and diversity.

Franca Sozzani was not only a fashion journalist, but also an activist who promoted various humanitarian and environmental projects. She was an ambassador for the UN Fashion 4 Development program, which works to empower women in developing countries through fashion. She founded the Child Priority Foundation, which cares for disadvantaged children.

Franca Sozzani was also a mentor for young designers and creatives, whom she supported with advice and support. She initiated the Who is on Next? competition, which recognizes new talent in Italian fashion. She was also one of the driving forces behind the Fashion Film Festival Milano, which promotes fashion films as an art genre.

Franca Sozzani died in Milan on December 22, 2016, as a result of cancer. She left behind a great legacy of creativity, courage and commitment that inspired the fashion industry and the world. She was honored with numerous awards, including the Legion d’Honneur in France and the Swarovski Award for Positive Change.

Franca Sozzani was a fashion visionary who made a difference with her work. She was a woman ahead of her time, using her voice for good.
